Guard Island Lighthouse is not only one of the oldest lighthouses in Ketchikan area, having been built in 1903, but also was of the area's most accessible to visitors. The Coast Guard automated the lighthouse in 1969 and today alerts boats entering the Tongass Peninsula of the impending coastline. The lighthouse is adjacent to Tongass Peninsula, near the Clarence Strait.
